Any outbound link on the page that returns a 4xx or 5xx status code, times out, or fails to resolve at all — redirects (3xx) are noted separately from hard failures, since a redirect isn't necessarily a problem on its own.
Does this check internal links, external links, or both?
Both — it checks every outbound link found on the page you enter, regardless of whether it points to your own domain or an external site.
How often should I run a broken link check?
Quarterly at minimum, or after any major site migration, redesign, or bulk content update — link rot accumulates gradually as external sites you've linked to get restructured or taken down.
Do broken links actually hurt SEO or AI visibility?
